Backpacking in the Alps

This blog post will be a little different than my others. Europe is one of my favorite places to spend time and the Alps will always have a special place in my heart.

This summer, I embarked on a backpacking journey through enchanting alpine towns, reveling in the beauty of scenic landscapes and witnessing breathtaking sunsets. Join me as I recount some of the remarkable adventures from my trip!

Exploring Aigle: Vineyards, Cows, + Mountain Views

Nestled in the picturesque Swiss canton of Vaud, Aigle is a charming town with a rich historical backdrop. Renowned for its medieval Aigle Castle, the town exudes a captivating blend of old-world charm and modern vitality. Aigle is situated amidst vineyards, showcasing its significance in the local wine culture. We were lucky enough to stay at one of these old vineyards which was such a charming and delicious experience.

After Aigle, we headed into the Alps to explore more of the mountainous terrain.

Guttanen: Shakey Lifts + Chilly Water

Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Guttannen is a quaint village surrounded by stunning mountain vistas. What sets Guttannen apart is its historical significance, as it is home to old Swiss army bunkers discreetly tucked within the mountainsides. These bunkers, remnants of Switzerland's military history, bear witness to the country's strategic defense measures during times of geopolitical tension. It was so fun to try and spot these hidden networks of bunkers on our lift ride over the water.

Aletsch Glacier: Exploring the Largest Alpine Glacier

Embarking on a hiking adventure to the Aletsch Glacier, we ended up at the largest glacier in the Alps. As you ascend, the crisp mountain air and panoramic views gradually reveal the icy expanse of the glacier, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience. The next morning we paraglided over the Aletsch Glacier which provided a bird's-eye perspective of its beauty.

The grandeur of the Alps is stunning. The sheer magnitude of these mountains is jaw-dropping as the jagged peaks pierce the sky. From glacial valleys, adorned with crystal-clear lakes to the reflections of nearby peaks, my jaw was floored the entire time.

As we explored the vast network of trails, every turn revealed a postcard-worthy panorama. The sense of scale is humbling. In the Alps, nature's grandeur is not merely observed; it is felt, experienced, and etched into the soul, leaving an indelible imprint of the breathtaking beauty that defines this remarkable mountain range.

My love for the Alps knows no bounds; the majestic peaks and pristine landscapes resonate with a passion that only deepens with each visit. One particular morning, as I woke up in my tent nestled in the heart of the Alps, I was greeted by an unexpected yet endearing sight – a curious cow licking the dew off my tent. This charming encounter not only showcased the harmonious coexistence between nature and my camping experience but also made me burst out into laughter of this surprising visitor. It's moments like these that make my connection with the Alps so special, where the breathtaking scenery and unexpected encounters create a tapestry of memories that I cherish dearly.
